Simple front garden makeover in gravel

A well laid out front garden can really enhance the appearance of any property.  You dont have to use an elaborate scheme.  In fact in small front gardens less is often more.

This garden is a case in point.  Before, it was just grass and because the grass was not in tip top shape, it actually just made the garden look neglected and detracted from the appreance of the house.  A beautiful lawn will enhance any garden but it is high maintenance.  Grass needs to be cut and fed regularly if it is to look good.   So we had a high mainteance garden that looked neglected at the same time.  Also looking after a small garden to the front of a mid terrance house means dragging  everything through the house so low maintenance is crucial.

We replaced the grass with gravel and planted directly into the gravel to provide a clean, low maintenance but aestethic solution.  We didn't over plant and left enough space for the plants to grow and spread over time.

We inserted some small square sandstone paving slabs into the gravel which provide structure and add another dimension and texture to the garden.

We used a palette of plants which are low maintenance, are evergreen and proivde some seasonal colour.  We used multiples of the same plant in groups of three.  This provides an simple aesthetic which makes a small space seem less busy and therfore larger.  The use of evergreen plants is important in a front garden as the garden should look good to walk past as you journey to and from your front door, whatever the season.
The result is a simple, smart almost zero maintenance front garden that is pleasing to look at and enhances the front of the house.
