Maturity in a Dublin Roof top garden

Even though we are in the garden design business a long time, I am still surprised by the way gardens mature and grow over the years. Late last summer, we did a tidy up on a roof garden that we completed a few years ago.

The roof garden was designed to provide a space for apartment dwellers to sit and relax or have a bbq with friends.  It is made up of a series of linked, chalk finish cube planters.

This is the same area of the roof garden on the day we finished.  You can see from the previous picture that the plants have grown nicely to create a living screen around the atrium area over the last couple of years .

The Italian cypress and phormiumns have really filled out and the bamboos are providing a really good screen and doing quite well on this very exposed site.

The garden features stone benches set amongst the plants - nice spot to relax in the evening with spectacular views over the city.  There is a resin/stone table and cube stools for dining.

Even the jacuzzi area is now made more private by the plants.
Roof gardens because of their nature are very prone to drying out particularly when plants are in containers.  To over come this issue, we installed an irrigation which is timed to keep the plants watered regularly.  This means that the garden is almost maintenance free - apart from our annual tidy up.
